A REAL IMPROVED PCAD MASTER DESIGNER CLONE

If you were ever a PCAD MD (Master Designer (DOS)) user for Analog Work, and loved the flow of that package during layout put hated the Ham Fisted manner of Library Handling and the general lack of seamless Integration of its various modules, then you should try FreePCB for 2 and 4 layer efforts. I submit that you will most likely find that it can really enable rapid and reliable results, as well as excellent library handling. For me, it's PCAD MD on steroids.

How to make FreePCB Useful

I've been using FreePCB for 4 years. I've made many custom part footprints and had boards manufactured by several houses.

Here is a pro-tip! After you generate the CAM files, change the end extension to the proper gerber file name. (Example: FreePCB outputs a ".fpc" file, right click, select properties, and change that extension to either ".oln , .drl, gto, gbl," etc..., and any board manufacturer will be able to produce your boards!)

Its easy to use, has free autorouter, useful parts libraries and easy to make more custom footprints!
